For a number of years, David St. Romain has been a popular fixture at local music venues, and now Louisiana’s Capital City is proud to have one of its own vying for the coveted top spot on “Nashville Star.”
Season Five of “Nashville Star,” the nation’s top-rated country music star search, premieres at 9 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 11, on the USA Network. This episode features the top 10 talented singers, and St. Romain is among those talented individuals.
St. Romain, a Baton Rouge native, auditioned in Houston with about 20,000 other aspiring singers for this season’s “Nashville Star.” His outstanding performance of Billy Currington’s “Must Be Doin’ Something Right” made a memorable impression on the judges and secured him a spot in the hand-selected top 10.
Speaking from his hotel room in Nashville, St. Romain explained his musical journey. At the early age of 10, he began playing the guitar, and his love for music just escalated from there.
After graduating from Woodlawn High School, St. Romain enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University to pursue a business degree. However, his talent had different plans.
“My third semester [of college], I got a production deal … to fund some recordings to try to get a record deal. So, I took a swing [in the music industry about] six years ago — that was when I packed everything I owned and moved to Nashville back in 1999. I lived there for three years, almost four.”
Those years were full of traveling and touring. In 2001, St. Romain released his first single from his “DSR” album. Despite his efforts, he still did not receive a record deal.
St. Romain knows that talent is not all it takes to succeed in the business. According to the artist, perseverance is the key ingredient for any aspiring singer or songwriter
“If you’re talented, that’s cool,” he said with the voice of experience. “[Talent is] about 60 percent of it, but the other 40 percent is perseverance … I knew there was no way that I would walk away … I still have a lot to prove to America.”
Refusing to lose faith in himself and his dream, St. Romain’s dedication and determination paid off six years later. Now living in Baton Rouge again, he thanks his wife, Elizabeth, and God for where he is today.
“I can’t take credit [for this experience],” he strongly affirmed. “[My successes are] really because of God and my community of help [including my fans].”
Truly grounded in his religion and a sincere love for his family, St. Romain is more than a musician. He’s a well-rounded guy with a striking, down-to-earth personality. His faith and family foundations will stand out this Thursday in the lyrics of his choice of song, “Wave on Wave” by Pat Green.
Even though St. Romain already has a long list of accomplishments, which includes the birth of his 11-week-old daughter, the artist still feels grateful to have made it this far in the competition.
From playing at Baton Rouge local spots like the Roux House, Sullivan’s and the Texas Club to singing on “Nashville Star” next to celebrities such as Jewel, Randy Owen and Blake Shelton, St. Romain views this experience as “an enormous blessing” and looks forward to what lies ahead.
“The greatest thing about [Nashville Star] is for some people it can be a stopping point, but for me it’s just a beginning.”
